20 Feb Learningonline.xyz to launch American Sign Language in 15 international languages
Native speakers from 15 countries around the world will be able to learn American Sign Language (ASL) in their own language.
ASL is a visual-gestural language, i.e. it is a language that is expressed through the hands and face and is perceived through the eyes. ASL is the 3rd most-used non-English language in the U.S. and is estimated to have over 2 million speakers in North America alone. It has a higher percent of enrollments in colleges and universities, above the top three languages spoken in the whole of North America.
Bilingualism, whether in signed or spoken, languages has been scientifically proved to be a great brain booster. It enriches and enhances cognitive processes and promotes cultural awareness, literacy, and other intellectual benefits. ASL is even more powerful as it also enables the users to be bimodal, expanding spatial awareness, mental rotation skills, and visual sensitivity.
The National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) reported that approximately 15% of American adults (37.5 million) aged 18 and over report some trouble hearing. American Sign Language (ASL) plays an important role in facilitating communication within the Deaf community and enabling them to communicate with each other, and others around the world.
“Our American Sign Language initiative is unique, as it offers an interface in 15 different languages, allowing users to learn to sign from their native language. If languages are all about communication, breaking down barriers and creating opportunities, then making ASL accessible is an important bridge between the hearing and hearing impaired communities,” stated Moaz Khan, VP Marketing. “Ensuring that ASL is core to training programs is crucial, whether to act as an enabler in education, improve service industries such as retail and hospitality, or fundamentally, to save lives in the healthcare and emergency services,” he added.
Cudoo’s American Sign Language Level 1 course covers the basics from alphabets and basic signs to emergency and useful phrases, with more levels on the way, and is available to learn from English, Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese (Mandarin), Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish, and Spanish.
